Patients can find it very frustrating when their doctors seem distracted and, in some scenarios, might begin the search for a new provider the next time they need care. But with strict documentation requirements, many doctors in the exam room find themselves in front of a computer to hopefully save time instead of fully focusing on the patient. If you don’t think of your experience as merely boxes to check you will get more out of them! If you only see something as a box, then do something else.Patients have always looked to clinicians for help and reassurance when it comes to their health, and the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted even further the need for connection between patient and provider. It’s good for you and good for your application (esp if it’s related to service in some way). After that your time would be better spent doing something you’re truly passionate about outside of medicine. However I agree that 12mo is long enough to figure this out. I don’t think you can get this by shadowing for 50hrs. It wasn’t until about 8-12 months in that I felt I had a solid understanding of what I was getting myself into. Before scribing, I had sort of created the job/life of a doc in my head based on limited encounters, what I read / saw in media / books / etc, and talking to others. to figure out if you actually want to become a physician! While a lot of the ‘knowledge’ and experience I gained as a scribe won’t transfer to Med school, it was still incredibly valuable. I think you’re missing the third (and most important) reason to scribe. I really enjoyed my 2.5 years of scribing and made great friendships with my fellow scribes and the physicians I worked with. And that’s not even mentioning the opportunities for leadership like becoming a trainer or lead scribe. It’s all about developing lasting relationships with providers Physicians and PAs (OP is throwing a hissy fit, so to calm him down, I have changed this), asking questions, learning how they process information, how they arrive at diagnoses, how they deal with grieving families, diverse patient populations, etc. The real benefit of scribing is determined by what you make out of it.
Sure, if you’re the scribe that just comes to work, types up some HPIs like a typing monkey, and leaves, then it’s not worth it to continue. There’s plenty of good things that can come out of scribing even after 12 months. This is an over-generalization and I hope future premeds don’t feel the urge to leave their scribe jobs just because of your blanket statement. Furthermore, you'll see your cohorts leaving the job for various reasons: moving, school demands, stress, too bossy of a chief scribe, etc.

I wish I only did scribing for 6-12 months because that was more than enough time to get what I needed: letter of recommendation from physicians and clinical experience. The main mistake I did as a scribe is I stayed in the job too long (big companies want your "verbal commitment" for 2 years, even though they can fire you at anytime). I asked 4 physicians just in case some fail to follow through (luckily, all went through for me). Of note, emphasis that you get letters from multiple physicians. Ask them early, and then store it to your Online Portfolio of letters. Probably even as early being 2 months into the job, you should have figured out by then which physicians to ask for.
